I love incorporating the work of local Tahoe artists into my interior designs. Why not take advantage of the talented painters, photographers and furniture builders that abound in the greater Lake Tahoe area? One-of-a-kind, hand-made pieces are a special, unique addition to any room. Personally knowing the individual who created the piece and understanding his/her design philosophy can give it even more meaning. Check out the work of some of my favorite South Lake Tahoe artists.

“Mountain Modern.” We often hear this term when referring to high-end mountain communities like Aspen, Vail, Big Sky, Jackson Hole and Park City. And now, the rapidly emerging Lake Tahoe.

Retro design is back in full swing. Minimalist, clean lines and Scandinavian influences are hip and becoming even more prevalent. These trends have created a resurgence of the A-frame home, with its triangular shape and dramatic, sloping roof that extends almost to the ground on two sides.

As a designer, I like to use at least one “animal-inspired” piece in each room. This could be in the form of a leopard print pillow, cowhide rug or wall-hanging trophy animal. But, as an animal lover, I can’t image using the real thing. Oh the guilt! Luckily, this “animal revival” is all the rage; big box retailers are stocking faux alternatives to taxidermy in creative and interesting ways. Guilt-free!

Designing with mirrors is not new. “Our ancient ancestors fashioned mirrors from polished stones as early as 4000 B.C.; [but] it wasn’t until the First Century that the Romans introduced a very rudimentary mirror made of glass,“ writes Bill Rau of M.S. Rau Antiques.
