Multifunctional Spaces Still Mixing It Up
One hot trend for 2022 is a “Multifunctional Space.” If you’re scratching your head like we are since that’s what we’ve been doing since 2020, here’s how trendsetters define today’s version of multifunctional: Pure, smooth lines with wooden panels and multi-levels to define functional zones, such as the kitchen, media space and working zones. 2

No, this is not a noodle dish to enjoy on the gorgeous green sofa (more on green later), but a design style that blends Scandinavian sensibility with Japanese tranquility. Think minimalist aesthetic mingling with natual elements, woods, muted palettes, plants and clean, simple lines. 1 Here’s another chance to incorporate harmonious home design to complement our gorgeous natural setting outside.
It's Easy Being Green
Sherwin-Williams paint color of 2022 is Evergreen Fog, a sophisticated gray-green hue chosen to nourish your soul. 3 Sounds like just the color to kick anxiety out and bring Zen vibes in. Green’s popularity is on par for a popular movement called Biophilic design, an idea that focuses on using green hues and plants to honor a more organic home setting, one that brings the outdoors inside. 1
Rounded Corners, Curved Furniture
Baby-proofing is on-trend for 2022. Maybe we’re taking the idea too literally, but rounded edges are seen in everything from kitchen islands and bathroom mirrors, to couches and barrel-backed chairs. The curved furniture trend is gaining momentum as designers are bringing back mid-century designs of the ’60s and ’70s. 1 Perhaps softer edges equal more relaxation, reviving memories of a time when life was more groovy, less complicated.
A Lot of Statements Are Being Made
Designers love to use the word “statement” to describe a new movement in style. In 2022, here are a few statements we’ve found intriguing:
Double Island Kitchens in Walnut or Oak
Organic materials and palettes inspired by nature are so popular that kitchen cabinet designers are bringing back walnut and oak for its naturally rich wooden grains. These deep colors lend to a neutral style that compliments today’s greening color palette. And to blow your mind more, how about double islands instead of one large workspace. A double island can be stacked for workability, leaving an aisle between to move around with ease. 4
Adding Glass for Glam
Designers are revisioning glass in lighting, tables and accessories to enhance the illusion of space by bouncing natural and artificial light to illuminate a room’s design. Glass can blend with mixed materials, such as leather or wood to elevate a space. 5
Two-for-One Bath Space
Practicality meets opulence when co-mingling the shower and tub space in one glass enclosure. Designers see this trend as cleaning up the bathroom by taking out traditional bath clutter and replacing it with a sleek all-in-one solution. Trendsetters also suggest adding wood-look tiles to enhance a natural feel and vertical tiles to add height and visual space. 6
As our world re-opens and we come out from an unprecedented time, we think design trends for 2022 are right on spot. Natural color schemes, such as soothing green/gray/blue palettes, warm wood, and glamming with glass will be smart upgrades to create a refuge you’ll be thankful to call home.
