designing with faux fur

Whether it’s fall fashion or interior design, fur is in! And, luckily, for we animal lovers, today’s technology makes it difficult to tell the difference between real versus faux.  So, we can enjoy the warm, luxurious texture without harming our animal friends.

With winter quickly approaching, the soft, warm opulence of fur – even faux fur- is quite alluring. Fur adds layers and texture to interior design, creating an inviting and luxurious space. And, it’s not just for mountain areas like Tahoe. Fur is on trend in big cities too.

There are many ways to utilize faux fur in interior design. I like to add faux fur in each of the rooms I design, whether it’s a faux fur blanket, pillow, rug, ottoman, poof or chair.

Here are some tips for designing with faux fur:

  • Set limits. Too much of a good thing is well, too much of a good thing. Be strategic in your selections. Add a faux fur pillow, blanket, rug OR chair, not all three. The impact will be greater with one faux fur piece than several. It’s not Iceland or Antarctica!

A variation of color (browns, tans, creams, greys) adds even more depth and interest and tends to look more “real.” Too, lighter colors can last year round. Darker colors are reflective of fall or winter while lighter colors like creams, and whites can last through spring and summer. So choose the color that reflects your interior color palette but also can withstand the change of seasons.

A faux fur throw blanket or pillows create a soft and regal respite. But don’t stop there. Living rooms, offices, dining rooms and nurseries can all benefit from faux fur pieces.

  • Lay it on Thick. Consider laying faux fur blankets over dining chairs, desk chairs and beds, ottomans, sofas, benches and even side tables or coffee tables. Faux fur is begging to be touched. Put it in places where people can stimulate one of their five senses.

  • Spend More to Get More. Cheap faux fur looks cheap. Longer length fur tends to look more realistic. Try to avoid short faux fur, unless it’s pertaining to a hide.
