When it comes to designing your walls, there are so many fantastic opportunities to be creative and to express your style and artistic interest. Each wall in your home is like a blank canvas and it’s up to you to fill it with your imagination.
Your walls can help define a certain style, direct your furnishing selections, showcase your personal tastes, tie your room together, add texture and create remembrances of friends, family, and occasions. (1)
You might be someone who subscribes to a more maximalist way of designing, and if so, you might have a lot of stuff going on in your room already. You might need a spot for your eyes to rest. Letting a wall stay blank could be a great way to add much needed negative space to a room that is bordering on to busy.
But, for those with a more minimalist design aesthetic, it’s easy for our walls to appear too sterile or just like big soulless spaces, so it’s important to design them with texture and color.
Check out these six fun ideas to bring your wall(s) to life.
Geometric Wood Accent Walls
A custom geometric accent wall is a great DIY opportunity to add a wow factor to your space. Create a pattern that best suits your style and transforms your space. Keep it a natural wood or paint it a bold, vibrant color. I love the sage green pallet illustrated here. Either way, the impact is fantastic.
Wallpaper
If you’re looking to amplify the visual appeal of your space, why not add some wallpaper? An eye-catching alternative to paint, wallpaper murals allow you to incorporate color, texture and pattern. It can completely transform a space whether you decide to paper an entire room with a classic pattern or create a stunning accent wall to complement your décor. (2)
Wallpaper has been gaining momentum on accent walls due to the unique new designs that have been created. We have searched far and wide to find wallpaper that will ‘wow’ you every time you walk in the room. They range from floral designs to patterns to landscapes, and even 3D options.
Vinyl Wall Paneling
PCV panels have a wide range of applications, from restaurant kitchens to hospitals Although they are most commonly seen in commercial applications, they can offer much in the way of residential installation as well. The panels are lightweight with excellent mechanical strength, are easy to install, are completely recyclable, require low to zero maintenance, are resistant to fire, water, rust, peel, and mold and add an awesome 3D effect to walls and ceilings alike. PCV panels come in a wide variety of patterns and textures too. Very cool product with endless application opportunities. (3)
Venetian Plaster
Venetian Plaster is a term used to refer to putty made from fired limestone combined with water. It’s then mixed together to make lime plaster. When the plaster is applied to the walls and exposed to carbon dioxide in the air, it turns back into limestone. It creates a beautiful marble look that is incredibly durable.
The material, which has been used to finish walls since ancient times, made its first comeback with the unfortunate “Tuscan” decorating movement of the ’90s that we’re all still trying to forget. But don’t write it off! Venetian plaster has been increasing in popularity. We love it in bathrooms, fireplaces and as kitchen hood surrounds. (4)
Leather Wall Tiles
It’s not wood; it’s leather. These artisan crafted ringlet tiles are woven vegetable tanned leather that captures the look of a cross-cut tree, showcasing its years of growth rings. These new wall tiles are amazing to look at and can add the organic outdoor feeling to your interior. Each leather design is hand-crafted and one-of-a-kind. This is the perfect opportunity to think outside the box and create something beautiful! (5)
Brushed Concrete
You can actually fake a concrete wall. If you like the industrial look. You’ll love this totally lifelike faux finish. Living in a concrete home is highly sought after these days. The cool look makes a solid backdrop for ‘gram-worthy pics, plus there’s a certain amount of street cred that comes with living in an unfinished space and saying IDGAF to traditional surfaces. Then again, the thought of spending a chilly morning or entire five-month winter in that cold concrete environment (physically and visually) sounds way less appealing. That’s why we were thrilled to learn about faux poured concrete finish, which is applied like plaster and looks incredibly close to real concrete. Try stamping in a pattern, adding a glossy finish or integrating lighting for a more dramatic affect. (6)
