The Latest in Sofa Trends – Talie Jane Interiors

In our previous article about Trends for 2021, we talked about this year’s design trends:

  1. Nostalgia
  2. Connection with Nature
  3. Comfort
  4. Calm
  5. Personal Expression

This years’ trending sofa style falls into these same categories. Curved sofas, also called conversation sofas or crescent sofas, is one of the biggest current trends. These sofas are popping up in bold velvet colors with brilliant, channeled tufting. “Fluting emerged as big in sofa trends this season and it is set to continue into next year,” confirms Claire Wilks, design team at sofa.com. This is a versatile trend that can accommodate contemporary or classical design schemes alike1. The curved sofas are great for conversations, lounging and entertainment.

Nostalgia

Art-deco is making a comeback. And the trending curved sofa definitely takes its inspiration from the curved lines and details of the Art-deco style2. Art-deco reached its peak in the 1920s, made a come-back 100 years after, and is still inspiring interior designers today. Trend predictors say we are in a full-blown Art-deco revival. In these challenging times, the revival of Art Deco which represents optimism, beauty and creativity is welcoming. The comfort in geometric shapes, curves and familiarity in the historic references kindles nostalgia and creates a comfortable vibe that is much needed in these testing times3.

Connection with Nature

We have seen an increased connection with nature during the pandemic. Design is trending towards “bringing the outside in,” which is also reflected in overall color palettes. Color trends are leaning towards nature-inspired colors like inky blues and moss greens1, as well as a return of earthy tones, like beige and rust. So, the curved velvet sofas are trending to reflect colors found in nature too.

Comfort

The overarching design trend this year is comfort. And oversized, curved sectionals fit perfectly into this trend. These curved, channeled sectionals are quite large and provide ample space to sink into. And with the trend toward velvet, they are uber soft and plush too. Velvet is now an even more practical choice as many vendors offer velvets with easy-clean technology, making it an easy and luxurious choice of fabric1.

Curved sofas are also called conversation sofas because of the ease with which we can design them for living rooms. The curved designs, unlike rigid rectangular sofas, helps us arrange them is various organic ways to promote interaction.

Calm

The highlight of these velvet fluted / channeled sectional is the fabric and the fluting. This clever upholstery technique creates a range of different looks and can be very eye-catching1. The rich velvets allow the fluting and channeling to reflect and catch the light beautifully. This effect, along with the smooth curves of the piece, creates a tranquil and calming effect that is not often obtained from sharp straight lines of a typical sectional.

Personal Expression

This channeled velvet sectional trend emerged in 2020, has continued into 2021, and has evolved. Now, there are more intricate pleating and quilting options aside from the fluted channels. But you can go as simple or as intricate as you like. This is where the client’s (YOU!!) personal preference comes into play. At the end of the day, the living room will be an expression of you and your family. You get to decide on what you like and how you want to express yourself. The different colors, shapes and styles, along with the modular nature of the sectionals, help you to decide and choose the perfect curved sofa and seating arrangement for you!
